Introductory Hand Building Class
Hand Building Class
Class cost: $60 + Materials: $35 for Clay
Clay Art Space is offering a 2-hour introductory hand building class to show how to use the hand building space. This class is for beginners to advanced level artists searching for a space to make hand built projects or sculptures that don’t require a potters wheel.
First we will give you a tour of the hand building space followed by going over studio procedures. You will learn where our tools are kept, where hand building takes place and how to use the space, where to put your clay scraps for recycling, where and how glazing or painting pieces works, and how to tidy up after yourself.
The second portion of the class will go over some basic techniques such as building sculptures and functional pieces using the coil method, how to make and use slip, how to roll a slab, and where to keep projects to dry.
The third portion of the class will briefly go over membership vs punch card fees, hourly fees, how we charge for bisque and glaze firing, and buying materials.
After you take the hand building class you will be eligible to sign up to have a punch card or to become a member to use the hand building space on your time.
Q: Why do I have to take this class before I can buy a punch card or membership?
A: Clay Art Space provides a well maintained work environment and we need members to be willing to help with the upkeep that keeps this place functioning safely. We recycle clean clay scraps as well, and there are procedures to follow to make clay scraps reusable.
This class will be every Thursday from 6 pm-8 pm, we ask that you call ahead to reserve a spot. Payment can be via online or in-store.
