Private lessons are available on Tuesday and Friday evenings typically, but we are adding Wednesday evenings in the month of May 2023 for our new members. These lessons are the best way to get on a wheel sooner than taking the month-long class. (These do not teach enough studio etiquette to qualify for membership use of the studio, unless you sign up for a lot of them.) These lessons can be a fun introduction to wheel throwing or hand building with an instructor, or they can be specific to develop a certain skill set in your development of pottery skills. These lessons are also great for wedding anniversaries or for couples date nights. Also great for kids and teens ages 13-18, or adults looking for something to do.
Private Wheel Throwing or Hand Building Lessons
We now offer private lessons. For $75/hr per person, up to 4 people in the same hour. Enjoy a fairly one-on-one experience with our talented instructors. All attendees are allowed to keep their one favorite piece and we'll do all the trimming, glazing & firing for wheel thrown pieces. Hand building pieces include kiln firing and glazing may be optional. Read below to learn the specifics and to book your private lesson for yourself or for you and your 3 best friends together! We recommend this activity for adults and teens only.
Covid-risk: Each hour allows up to 4 people to sign up. This means you may be in a room with other people you don't know. Studio members are allowed to use the studio during these times too.

- Hand building is available on Tuesday. We have work tables for this activity. Slab rollers are available as well as rolling pins. Techniques include slab, coil, & pinch. We can not offer hand building and wheel throwing for the same group at the same time. The group must choose the same activity.
- We have 10 wheels available in one room.
- Plan on a 1-hour session. It goes by very fast. Plan to get messy. Remove rings, jewelry, long necklaces and watches before throwing. Trim your fingernails. Tie up long hair to keep it out of harms way. Do not wear perfumes, please.
- There is a 1.5 hour session available as well.
- Everyone will sign a Release of Liability Waiver upon arriving.
- After clay is used, hand washing is done only in the buckets of water provided. Clay, of any amount, does not go in any of our sinks and drains. If clay is found in a sink, an extra charge of $300 will be added to your party.
- We recommend the wheel throwing activity for ages 13 and up only. We mean it. This is not easy for adults to do, which means children under 13 will not do well. A huge mess will be made and some clean up is expected. If your child doesn't like to clean up their room, you should not buy them this lesson.
- A brief, but detailed, demonstration on the wheel will be given by an instructor, followed by everyone giving the pottery wheel a spin with clay. Then a little bit of clean up of the wheel after throwing.
- The instructor will be on hand to verbally coach you along, at a distance.
- Everyone will get a 2 lb. ball of clay that is ready to throw on a wheel. Participants may make more than one piece but would pick their 1 favorite to keep. Additional pieces are $25 each.
- There are five glaze colors to choose from. We (the staff of Clay Art Space) will care for your pieces, trim the bottom, kiln fire, and dip glaze all the pieces after the lesson is over. Individuals may not paint or glaze their own wheel-made items from these events. If you wish to do the full process, please sign up for our month long wheel throwing class.
- The finished pieces will be ready to pick up in appx. 8 - 20 weeks. We will call you to let you know they are done.
- Kiln firing times vary and not all pieces fit into the same kiln firing, so it can take a while to get all the pieces fired.
- We charge $75/hr, which is non refundable, and is to be paid in advance for 1 to 4 individuals.
- Purchase your space on our website.
Cancellation Policy: If you don't show up for your paid time slot, we accept your purchase price as a donation to our cause. Your payment is forfeited and non-refundable. Thank you for helping the studio survive.
**Quality of work produced is not guaranteed. A fun time and friends bonding are a large part of the purpose of the experience. There are health hazards associated with clay activities and each person is responsible for their ability to participate in this activity. Please be aware of our fragrance and pet allergy policies, meaning don't wear perfumes and pets are not allowed in our facility, especially furry ones. We ask for your consideration to wear clothing that does not have pet hairs clinging to them. We are also a Glitter-Free zone.
**Long hair must be tied up in a braid or a secure ponytail that won't fall forward. Hair can get caught by the motion of the wheel and quickly cause serious injury. Jewelry such as long necklaces, finger rings, bracelets, and watches should be removed before sitting at a wheel. Fingernails should be trimmed or cut short. Long or fancy fingernails interfere with producing pottery.
**Please refrain from using perfumes and other man-made scents when planning to visit the studio.
**Face-Masks are recommended in the studio.
**For everyone's safety and well being, you must certify that all members of your group are in good health and have not been exposed to covid-19 or have other signs of illness. If you have tested positive, or suspect you have covid-19, we ask that you not enter our premises at all. If you have been contacted after being near someone who has tested positive, please complete a 14 day quarantine and get tested at least twice to show two negative results.
**Due to allergies, please ensure your clothing is free of fragrances, perfumes, pet hairs and dander.
