Beginning Hand-Building and Wheel Throwing
In this challenging hands-on class students (age 14 -18) learn the basics of pottery by making a variety of hand-built pots using pinch, coil, and slab methods, and using the wheel for thrown pottery. This class is geared for home schooled students but can be attended by other high school teens that are not in a home school program without gaining credit points.
For school credit this class requires 90 hours and attendance twice a week for 12 weeks.
Class time: 48 Hours for 12 weeks Tues/Fri from 2pm-4pm.
Homework to be completed outside of class time: 42 hours.
Students will complete 8 projects of their design & choosing using each method presented, two written reports, one open book test, a sketchbook, a project log, YouTube video watching, and internet searches and other tasks as outlined. On the wheel, more items will be created for practice, but only the best ones will be completed for the class.
Self-direction, respect for community, attendance & immaculate clean-up are part of the successful grade. Class size: 3 to 6 persons
Students learn:
- The basics of hand building using the pinch, coil, & slab method
- The basics of wheel throwing: wedging clay, centering, and throwing
- For credit classes, a curriculum is provided, and requirements are filled to attain a grade
Students create 3 hand-built items and 5 wheel thrown utilitarian items for a grade.
This class is $350/month or $1050 for a semester. An Entrance Interview with a parent is required prior to registering for this class. Please call or email the studio to set up an appointment prior to the semester start dates.
Class fee Includes: Art Instruction w/ instructional materials, progress reports & tracking, kiln firings, glazes, use of studio tools & equipment, 8 finished projects, 40 lbs of clay. Additional clay purchased if needed at $25/bag, recycled.
Other class cost requirements not included in class fee: Sketchbook, Drawing Implements, Binder w/ Tabs, Pottery Books, Internet Access, Entrance Fees to Museum or Other Events if Applicable. Other fees may be charged for extra items created over the class requirement, or for oversized items above 7”.
WINTER TERM: Registration open Jan 17-Jan 24, 2022
February 1, 2022, to April 29, 2022. (No classes for the week of Spring Break)

FALL TERM: Registration open August 22-Sept 6, 2022
September 13, 2022, to December 9, 2022. (No classes for the week of Thanksgiving)
